5 Tickets For Network Members. Ideas Lab On Creative & Cultural Tourism. Case Study – Maribor

Maribor, the second largest city of Slovenia, is seeing a rapid increase in tourism and is becoming more and more attractive to visitors interested in experiencing new places.

At the same time, local actors are not as connected to one another as they could be, the stories presented are scattered and lack a systematic and coordinated approach. The local tourism industry lacks strategic marketing and the existing public structures designed to support it are not working properly. Moreover, Maribor has difficulties collaborating with neighbouring cities. The only existing tourism authority – the Tourism Bureau of Maribor – is being closed on 1 November 2018.

What to do about this absence of structure, where scattered private interests are competing to fulfil the needs of growing tourism flows? How to build a sustainable and successful ecosystem for tourism in the city? How can tourism in the city become and remain sustainable? And how might the city increase tourism’s contribution to the economic growth and quality of life in the city?

These are some of the key questions that you, five international practitioners from the field of creative and cultural tourism, will explore with local actors. The trip involves three days of analysis, research, and engagement with local cultural and tourism structures. Participants will study local resources and interview local actors working in tourism and culture. Finally, they will have the opportunity to draw on their own broad knowledge and expertise to find answers to the challenges currently facing tourism in Maribor. Together with a local team you will help define the next steps that Maribor’s tourism industry will take!

So, if you are looking for new international partnerships and an international exchange of practice and knowledge; if you have expertise in creative and cultural tourism and an awareness of the interrelations between private, public, and creative structures and are eager to work on the ground, you are more than welcome to join us!

Please send your applications by 10 September 2018 to: katja (at) rajzefiber.si. Applications should include:
